New teen drivers don’t take in as much information when scanning their surroundings as more experienced drivers do. Quite often, their attention is focused on the road just a few feet in front of their vehicle and so they are easily surprised by hazards that seem to “jump out of nowhere”. In this lesson teens learn where to look, when to look, what to look for, and what to do when they identify hot spots that require more of their attention.

New teen drivers are less likely to recognize that a situation is hazardous until it is too late to respond. When there are multiple or hidden hazards they often don’t have the experience necessary to respond appropriately. In this lesson teens learn about hazard clues and masks that help them anticipate risky situations. They will practice identifying multiple hazards in quick succession and learn what can happen if they fail to recognize hidden hazards.

New teen drivers have a hard time adjusting their speed and the amount of space they leave around their vehicle to compensate for reduced visibility and stopping distances. In this lesson teens not only become familiar with situations that require them to adjust their sight, speed, and space, but will also practice adjusting their speed and space in a variety of driving conditions in order to help them maintain vehicle control and avoid the crash.

Novice drivers have difficulty accurately estimating the gap or amount of space needed to make critical driving maneuvers such as left turns or merges. In this lesson teens learn about “Go Zones”, or the distance needed between their vehicle and oncoming vehicles. Teens also learn how big their Go Zone must be depending on the speed of oncoming traffic and the maneuver they’re trying to perform.

Young drivers get distracted away from the roadway more frequently and for longer periods of time than experienced drivers. This is a problem since a lot can happen in just a few seconds of driving. Since driving is a new task, teens actually need to devote more of their attention to maintaining control of their vehicle than a more experienced driver would. In this lesson teens learn the negative effects of looking away from the road for more than two seconds and will practice strategies for eliminating controllable distractions and making necessary adjustments for distractions that they can’t control.
